Did you know the Dominican Republic is the most visited destination in the Caribbean? The island nation is home to the tallest mountain peak in the Caribbean, the largest lake in the Caribbean, and the lowest point in the Caribbean. Oh…and there are also some pretty incredible beaches and top-rated golf courses. The average temperature is just under 80 degrees, making it the perfect destination year-round.
A Brief History of the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. The island was once home to the Taino people (who also inhabited Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and The Bahamas). During Christopher Columbus’s first voyage, in 1492, he claimed the island for Spain. After more than 300 years under Spanish rule, the Dominican people declared independence.
Amber Cove
In 2015, the Amber Cove Cruise Center opened along the Dominican Republic northern coast. The cruise haven is located just north west of the town of Puerto Plata on the Bay of Maimon. Puerto Plata is a popular beach town with a rich Spanish colonial history. The area was first discovered in Columbus and was the site of one of the first forts in the Americas.
The port was designed so that cruise passengers can easily navigate the area. A transportation hub is awaiting where visitors can access taxis and rental cars to explore the island on their own, or book a private excursion.
The area comes complete with beautiful beaches, a relaxing resort-style pool with a swim-up bar, a lazy river, and water slides. There are also plenty of shops where you can pick up Dominican specialties such as coffee, chocolate, rum, and amber.
