All You Need to Know About Visiting SeaWorld Orlando with Kids

Our three kids are obsessed with thrill rides and sea animals, so a trip to SeaWorld Orlando was inevitable for us.  I had reservations about visiting the park, but I was pleasantly surprised by everything the park has to offer.  Over the last couple of decades, the park has grown from more than aquariums and animal shows.  It’s now a mecca for rollercoasters and thrill rides and home to some of the most unique rides in all of Orlando, Florida.

In this post, we’ll break down all of the attractions and ocean-themed fun by age group so you can see just how much SeaWorld Orlando has to offer!

Getting Around SeaWorld Orlando

The rides and attractions of SeaWorld Orlando encircle a lagoon at the center of the park. 

If you’re traveling with little kids, you may want to head to Sesame Street, first.  There are signs posted around the park showing you how to get- how to get to Sesame Street.  Just past the entrance (when you see the first coaster), head right down a path and follow it to Sesame Street Land.

If you’re a mission to tackle some of the most insane coasters in Orlando, you’re going to want to head left.

We suggest hitting up Sesame Street Land, or a few of the coasters, before heading to the animal shows, encounters, and aquariums.

It’s easy to do a lot of unnecessary walking at SeaWorld Orlando- since the attractions circle a lagoon, you’ll have to backtrack if you don’t do the attractions as you come to them.

The Animals of SeaWorld

Thousands of animals call SeaWorld Orlando home.  Here, you can get up close and personal with dolphins, whales, rays, octopus, sharks, penguins, fish, and more!

Be sure to take a look at the daily schedule to see what shows and learning experiences are available during your visit.  Choose from Dolphin Days, Orca Encounter, Sea Lion High: The New Class, Pets Ahoy, and Ocean Discovery.

Dolphin Cove

Dolphin Cove is a 700,000 gallon lagoon that is houses a pod of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. This is one of the largest interactive dolphin pools in the world.  If you pay for a dolphin feeding/encounter, it will take place here.

Pro-Tip: Dolphin feeding tends to draw a large crowd, so plan on going first thing in the morning.

Dolphin Nursery

Is there anything cuter than a baby dolphin?  We think not!  The Dolphin Nursery is home to new dolphin mommies and their calves.  

Pro-Tip: This is one of the most popular attractions in the park.  It is located right near the entrance of the park.  If you’re interested in visiting, stop by right as you enter the park.  If the area is closed off that means there’s a dolphin in labor or one that has just given birth.

Jewel of the Sea Aquarium

Located next to the Journey to Atlantis ride, this aquarium boasts jellyfish illuminated by an interactive backlight.

Manatee Rehabilitation Area

Each year countless manatees are injured by boats and ships, or malnourished when their food source is wiped out.  Florida zoos, aquariums, and SeaWorld Orlando take in these gentle creates to rehabilitate them and release them- when it’s possible to do so.  

In the rehab area, you may be able to wish these creatures a speedy recovery and learn how you can help keep them safe.

Manta Aquarium

Our favorite spot to watch the marine animals was the Manta Aquarium.  We watched in amazement as thousands of graceful animals danced in front of our view.  

Pro-Tip:  Hit up this aquarium before or after you ride Manta.  The aquarium is air conditioned and is a great spot to take a break for the Florida heat.

Pelican Preserve

Located near the Manta Ride and Manta Aquarium, these outdoor exhibit is home to several rescued pelicans.

Antarctica Empire of the Penguins

I’m going to be very honest with you- we were really disappointed with this exhibit.  We waited in line for 40 minutes to see the penguins…and it was literally just tank with penguins.  Perhaps we should have done our research, because we though that it may be a ride (considering the line).  

Don’t get me wrong, the penguins were a lot of fun to watch, but the line was really long considering it was just another aquarium.

Shark Encounter

Surround yourself by sharks, barracuda, eels, and venomous fish in the world’s largest underwater acrylic tunnel!    The 60 foot tunnel is an absolute must-see!

Stingray Lagoon

Stingray Lagoon is another popular animal attraction.  This habitat showcases over 200 stingrays- some of them as large as 5 feet in diameter!  Don’t miss the opportunity to feed and touch these gentle creatures!

Turtle Trek

This habitat offers underwater viewing rooms that give visitors an up-close-and-personal view of turtles.  Follow a sea turtles journey their sandy nest to the ocean.

Wild Arctic Habitat

Learn all about belugas, walruses, and harbor seals in this freezing cold habitat!  

SeaWorld Orlando with Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers (+ Family Rides)

Believe it or not, there is plenty to do with young kids at SeaWorld Orlando!  Although our boys (age 5) weren’t tall enough for the rollercoasters, they still had loads of rides they could experience in Sesame Street Land.

Rides for Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers

Abby's Flower Tower

With a bit of magic from Abby Cadabby’s wand, you’ll be sent up, up ,up in a colorful flower pot on Abby’s Flower Tower.  This ride gives you great views of the hustle and bustle of Sesame Street.

 Height Requirement: 42″

Big Bird's Twirl 'n' Whirl

Hop into one of Big Bird’s nests and twirl ’round and ’round on this family-fun ride!  Riders control the speed of the spinning with a steering wheel at the center of the nest.

Height Requirement: 36″

Buckle up and hold on tight as you bounce up and down on Cookie Monster’s Cookie Drop!

Elmo's Choo Choo Train

All aboard Elmo’s Choo Choo Train!  Be on the lookout for butterflies, caterpillars, and Twiddlebugs on this family-friendly ride.

Height Requirement: 36″

Infinity Falls

Climb aboard a circular raft and prepare to get drenched on this family water ride!  Explore tropical ruins filled with breathtaking waterfalls, surprise geysers, and flowing fountains before plunging down one of the tallest drops of its kind into a pounding waterfall!  Infinity Falls is the world’s tallest river rapids attraction!

Height Requirement:  42″- 77″

Pro-Tip:  Plan on wearing clothes and shoes that will dry easily if you’re going to ride the water rides.  Use a dry bag or rent a locker to keep your items dry.  Hit up the ride early in the day for the lowest waits- and time to dry off.

There are family dryers available for an additional charge.

Journey to Atlantis

This family-friendly flume rollercoaster transports you to the mythical paradise known as Atlantis.  You’ll explore dark passageways in the sunken city before being catapulted 60 feet out of the city gates into the waters below.

Height Requirement: 42″

Pro-Tip: Try to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for shorter wait times- this is one of the most popular rides at the park!  Avoid queueing up for the ride after one of the shows lets out- people tend to catch a show and then do the ride since it is close to the Whale and Dolphin Theaters.

Rubber Duckie Water Works

If your little one isn’t up for the larger water rides, or isn’t tall enough, they can still have fun splashing about in the Rubber Duckie Water Works- an outdoor splashpad.

Slimey's Slider

This is my favorite ride in all of Sesame Street Land (who am I kidding…it’s my favorite in the entire SeaWorld Orlando theme park!).  This exhilarating swoop and swivel ride spins, rocks, and slides!  

Height Requirement: 42″

This classic ride is perfect for young kids and family’s alike. 

Guests under 42 inches tall must be accompanied by a supervising companion (at least 14 years old) standing next to the rider on the inside of the Carousel to ride. One supervising companion (at least 14 years old) per child under 42 inches. Hand-held infants are only permitted to ride on the bench seats.

Pro-Tip:  Ride the carousel during the Shamu show times for the shortest wait times!

Super Grover's Box Car Derby

If your kiddo isn’t quite tall enough for some of the larger coasters (listed in the section below), they’ll be happy to know there’s a kid-friendly coaster in Sesame Street Land!  Super Grover’s Box Car Derby is a family-friendly coaster full of hills, twists, turns, and small dives!

Height Requirement: 38″

SeaWorld Orlando with Big Kids and Teens

Our adrenaline junkie daughter was super stoked to see how many thrill rides there are at SeaWorld Orlando.  The rollercoasters there are insane– some of the best in Orlando!  If you’re older kids like thrill rides, this is definitely the place for them!

Ice Breaker

The Ice Breaker is SeaWorld’s first launch coaster.  It features four airtime filled launches (both forwards and backwards!) and a reverse launch into the steepest beyond vertical drop in Florida! The ride has a series of exhilarating twists, turns, and airtime hills that will send your heart racing.

Height Requirement: 54″

Kraken

Designed to mimic the mythological beast that terrified sailors for centuries, Kraken is Orlando’s only floor less roller coaster.  Riders feet dangle as the zoom across this exhilarating coaster at heights of 150 feet! 

Height Requirement: 54″

Mako

You guys!  Our 9-year-old is obsessed with this ride.  Mako is the tallest and fastest rollercoaster in Orlando!  This hyper coaster is known for it’s high speeds, deep plummets, and racing turns.  Named after one of the ocean’s fastest sharks, this coaster hits speeds of 73 mph.

Height Requirement: 54″

Manta

Soar like a manta on the only flying roller coaster of its kind in Florida!  The ride will send in in a head-first, face-down nosedive before you are sent spinning, gliding, and flying like a giant manta ray.  

Height Requirement: 54″

Pro-Tip: The lines are the shortest during the first hour of the park opening.  You cannot take anything with you on the ride, so unless you have someone sitting this one out- you’ll need to rent a locker to store your stuff.

No outside food, beverages, or coolers are allowed to be brought into SeaWorld Orlando, except you may bring a bottle of water or a refillable water bottle.

Freezing in Antarctica! Visiting SeaWorld Orlando in the winter is a TOTALLY different experience! Many of the rides were closed because of the cold/wind.

On our first family visit to SeaWorld Orlando, we visited in January and it was freezing!  Without warning, every single rollercoaster was closed and we were told that due to the temperatures, most of the animal shows were unavailable.  We got to see the dolphin show, but all of the other animals were tucked away elsewhere.

12 Best Springs Near Orlando

Believe it or not, there is more to Orlando than Disney World, Universal Studios, Legoland, and SeaWorld.  Orlando is home to a ton of natural attractions, too. Some of the best springs near Orlando make for the perfect day trip from this super busy city.  

What better way to break up your days at the theme park than by spending some time in Florida’s crystal clear waters?

Florida is home to more than 1,000 natural springs.  It has more natural springs than anywhere else on the planet!  Not only are the springs drop-dead gorgeous, but they are super relaxing!  The springs are home to some of Florida’s iconic wildlife such as manatees, turtles, otters, and yes…alligators.  

The springs near Orlando were Florida’s original tourist attraction.  People would migrate from the north to relax in the cool Florida waters.  Silver Springs and de Leon Springs  were once some of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States.  

Today the springs offer visitors a space to swim, relax on an innertube, kayak, paddleboard, canoe, snorkel, scuba dive, and even enjoy a boat tour.

Silver Glen Springs

While some of these springs are near Orlando, others require a little bit of a longer drive.  The great thing about some of these springs is that you can often hit more than one spring a day.  For instance, Alexander Springs and DeLeon Springs are really close to each other.  You could easily hit one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.  No matter which spring you choose, you seriously cannot go wrong.  All of them make a perfect day trip from Orlando.

Wekiwa Springs State Park

It’s amazing to think that this gorgeous natural wonder is just 14 miles from downtown Orlando.  Wekiwa Springs State Park has fabulous emerald waters, lush tropical hammocks, and miles of trails for your to explore.

The entrance fee is $6 per vehicle.  Like many of the nearby springs, it’s suggested that you arrive early as the springs tend to hit capacity early in the day.  

The park is popular for swimming, snorkeling, diving, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and simply floating on an innertube.

You could easily spend the day at the theme park and unwind in the crisp cool water in the afternoon.

Wekiwa Springs State Park

Kelly Park/Rock Springs

Kelly Park/Rock Springs is 31 miles from Orlando.  This stunning oasis has some of the most gorgeous crystal clear water.  Kelly Park is a nature park that is popular for hiking, swimming, and camping. The lazy river run for Rock Springs starts in Kelly Park and continues over 8 miles outside of the park.  

The cost for Kelly Park is $3 for a car of 2 people or $5 for 3-8 people.  The park is super popular on warm days so we strongly suggest getting there early.  The park often reaches capacity early.  This is truly one of the best springs near Orlando!  We cannot wait to explore this park!

Blue Spring State Park

Blue Spring State Park

34 miles outside of Orlando, you’ll find one of our favorite hangouts- Blue Spring State Park.  This park is extremely popular on hot days so plan on getting there early!  

What makes it so popular, you might ask?  Not only is it close to the city, but it is literally the most perfect place in the world for tubing.  The natural lazy river is incredibly refreshing- especially during the heat of summer. 

The park is also popular for swimming, snorkeling, diving, paddling, hiking, and biking.  

The entrance fee is $5 per vehicle.  The park offers inner tube rentals at the park.

The park is equally impressive during the winter months.  When the thermometer drops, the park becomes a sanctuary for manatees.  You can expect to see anywhere between 25 and 500 manatees in the springs!

De Leon Springs State Park

46 miles miles away, you’ll find one of our favorite springs near Orlando!  De Leon Springs State Park is another site that was once a popular tourist destination.  The site was once home to the Ponce de Leon Springs Hotel and Casino which was popular with wealthy northern visitors.  

 By the 1950s the site featured tropical gardens, a jungle cruise, a tram tour, oh yeah… and a water skiing elephant.  

While the days of water skiing elephants are long gone, this place is still pretty rad.  It features a unique restaurant where you make your own pancakes, and a swimming hole the resembles a swimming pool.  

There are so eco-boat tours available where you can see what the park looks like from the river without having to get wet.

If you don’t mind getting wet, you can rent a kayak or canoe (or bring your own) and hit the water.  The cost to enter the park is $6 per vehicle.  This unique park is one of the best springs near Orlando and definitely worth the visit!

Alexander Springs

Alexander Springs is one of the largest and most accessible springs in the state.  It is the perfect place for families with young children.  Alexander Springs is 59 miles away from downtown is truly one of the best springs near Orlando. 

The park is well known for camping, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and paddling.  The launch site really close to the swimming hole so it is easy to go back and forth between the two.  

Entrance fees are $7/person on weekdays and $10/person on weekends. 

Alexander Springs

Juniper Springs

68 miles from Orlando, you’ll find one of the most picturesque kayak trails in Florida.  The seven-mile route will take your breath away.  Juniper Springs is idea for swimming, snorkeling, paddling, and hiking.  Paddling is popular year round, so don’t feel like visits are limited to just the warm months.  

The cost to enter the park is $7/person on weekdays and $10/person on weekends.  There is a launching fee of $10/watercraft.

Silver Glen Springs

69 miles outside of Orlando you’ll find Silver Glen Springs.  Trust us, this park is well worth the drive!  The aquamarine water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and floating. The water here is super clear and shallow making it perfect for children.  

Like Blue Spring, it is also a refuge for manatee during the winter months. 

Admission is $6 per person.

Silver Springs State Park

Although this park is 80 miles outside of the city, you should still definitely consider visiting it!  Silver Springs State Park was one the state’s first tourist attractions and one of the most unique springs near Orlando. 

 In the 1950s, more than 800,000 people a year would visit the park!  The park is famous for its glass bottom boats and kayaking trail.  It is also known for being the winter home to manatees. 

We suggest taking the glass bottom boat tour as soon as you enter the park, it’s a great way to get acquainted with the area.  The cost of the boat tour is $12 for adults.

Silver Springs State Park

Although there is no swimming permitted, the park is perfect for paddling.  The park offers rentals, or you can pack your own vessel.  The cost to launch is $4/vessel.  There is also an entrance fee of $2/person.

Rainbow Springs State Park

The name alone makes us want to check this place out!  83 miles away from Orlando you’ll find one of the most stunning springs the state has to offer.  The water here is sapphire blue and the swimming area is massive!  The park features some of the best hiking trails in Florida and features man-made waterfalls and beautiful natural gardens.  

The park is popular for hiking, snorkeling, tubing, paddling, and swimming.    The cost to enter is $2/person.  

Salt Springs

Salt Springs is one of the jewels of the Ocala National Forest.  Located just 85 miles from the city, this unique spring is home to freshwater and saltwater fish.  Blue crabs, turtles, and manatees also call these springs home.  Swimming, fishing, snorkeling, and hiking are all popular here.  Admission is $7 /person.

Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park

Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park

Gilchrist Blue Springs was rated the #1 Florida spring by our Instagram followers.    136 miles away from Orlando, you’ll find Florida’s newest state park- Gilchrist Blue Springs.  The park is known for paddling, swimming, and snorkeling.  

There are kayaks and canoes available to rent on the site.  If you go out for a paddle, be sure to wander past the ropes that mark off the swimming hole.  The river is absolutely remarkable!  

The cost to enter is $4 to $6 per vehicle.  If you make the drive from Orlando, we suggest also making a stop at nearby Poe Springs and Rum Island Springs to make the drive worth your while!  These are also great places to check out in the event that the park is at capacity when you arrive.  

Ginnie Springs

Ginnie Springs is 138 miles outside of Orlando, making it just over 2 hours away.  You would definitely need to dedicate an entire day to visiting this state park.  Ginnie Springs advertises itself as a “true slice of pure Florida”.  It is made up of seven springs and several caves.  These caves make the spring one of the most unique freshwater diving spots in the world.  Aside from diving, the springs are also popular for tubing, paddling, swimming, snorkeling, and hiking.  

Admission ranges between $15-$20/adult depending on the season.  Children ages 5-12 are $5.  Although this site is the furthest from Orlando, it is definitely worth the drive!

Are There Alligators in the Springs?

Something visitors need to understand about Florida is that alligators can be found in any fresh body of water. Our state is home to more than a million alligators that live in lakes, rivers, marshes, canals, springs, and even ponds at places like Disney and golf courses.

There is always the possibility of seeing an alligator in a fresh body of water. In fact, as Floridians we just assume that they are lurking around.

However, alligators don’t tend to like all of the splishing and splashing. Think of them as cranky old people. They’ll try to stay as far away from humans as possible.

Now, this doesn’t mean you won’t be standing in line, it just means that it will be a much shorter line.

We like to use them to secure spots for 2 rides and 1 character meet and greet.

How Do You Get FastPass+?

Once you purchase your park tickets, or if you have an annual pass, you can set up your FastPasses. You can use the My Disney Experience app, or the My Disney Experience section of the Disney World website. You can also hit up one of the kiosks in the parks.

When Can You Book FastPass+?

You can book your FastPass+ slots 30 days in advance, or 60 days in advance if you are staying at a Disney Resort. The earlier you try to book these time slots, the more likely you’ll be able to reserve your favorite ride. Some Fastpasses go quickly! The time slots become available at 7 AM EST so set your alarm!

One of the best secrets to Disney FastPasses is knowing when to use the pass. The best time to use your FastPasses is when the park is the busiest. Makes sense, right? More people in the park = longer wait times. The best window of time to book your FastPasses is from 10 AM to 3 PM when the park is hoppin’.

The lines before 10 AM won’t be too outrageous since the park is just opening. They also decrease after 3 PM when people head back to their hotels to escape the crowds of hot Florida heat.

Pick the Most Popular Rides First!

Obviously, FastPasses for the most popular rides are going to get snagged first. Booking the hardest rides first is a quick and easy Fastpass secret that people may not even think of. The most popular rides, right now, are Frozen Ever After, Flight of Passage, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Slinky Dog Dash.

Book your FastPass for these rides later in the day– chances are, there will be more FastPasses available.

If you are dying to ride one of these rides, and don’t have a FastPass, you should plan on spending at least an hour waiting in line.

Use Single Rider To Save Your Disney Fastpasses For Other Attractions

If you can’t resist some of the big kid/adult rides that your toddler or kid can’t go on- don’t worry, Disney has a plan! They have a system called Rider Switch Passes. See a cast member at one of the qualifying rides and they’ll hand you a Rider Switch Pass. Basically, one grown-up waits in line and goes on the ride while the other grown-up hangs out with the kids. Once, they’ve exited the ride, you pass off the kids and they hand you the pass. You get to ride the ride without having to wait in line again! Holla!

If just one of you wants to ride one of these rides, some rides offer a single rider line. Basically, you’ll fill in any empty seats on the ride. There are 4 rides in Disney World that offer single rider lines. They are Expedition Everest, Test Track, Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster, and Millennium Falcon Smuggler’s Run. 

This is also a great option if you don’t mind splitting up with your group! You and your travel companions can all do this, ride the ride with some random person, and meet back up!

Refresh Your App To See If Your Desired Fastpass Comes Available

If there’s a ride you must do or a princess you must meet but can’t find a Fastpass for it, don’t give up. People cancel their Fastpasses because their kids are having a meltdown, or decide they want to ride another ride, or change their mind for a plethora or reasons. The minute someone forfeits their FastPass, it becomes available for someone else to snag. That someone could be you!

Just keep refreshing the app!

Check the morning of your visit (since people modify their selections the night before or even early that morning!). Also check after 10 AM because people may decide to alter their plans.

Think Things Out

When you pre-arrange your FastPasses, you’ll want to make sure they are near each other. Do yourself a favor and scope out a park map before you book your passes. If you’re hitting up Space Mountain at noon and then Splash Mountain at 1:15, you’re going to have to haul ass from Tomorrowland clear across the park to Frontierland.

It would make so much more sense to cluster rides like Space Mountain, Tomorrowland Speedway, and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin together.

Peter Pan’s Flight, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Character Meet & Greets also make a great trio!

Not Everyone in Your Group Needs to Use the Same FastPasses

Anyone over the age of 13 can manage their own FastPasses. If half of your group wants to ride Splash Mountain, and the other half wants to take it easy on Pirates of the Caribbean, you can choose which people will use which FastPasses.

Be Smart About How You Use your FastPass

Remember, you only get 3 FastPasses that you can pre-book (more on why I say “Pre-book” in a minute). Think of these 3 FastPasses as a precious gift. For the love of God, do not waste them on silly things like parades, fireworks, or unpopular rides. It’s not that Dumbo, the Magic Carpets of Aladdin, It’s a Small World, and the Monster’s Inc. Laugh Floor aren’t great attractions, because they are… they just aren’t worth using a FastPass for.

You Don’t Need to be at your Ride at the Exact Time You’ve Rserved Your Spot

Your FastPass window is actually an hour-long. This means you can arrive at the ride or attraction any time within that hour long window and be let in.

If you’re early for everything, like me, you can arrive 5 minutes before your FastPass window opens. Or…if you’re one of those people who is late for everything, you can arrive 15 minutes after your window. This comes in handy if you’re fighting over what rides to use your FastPass on and you have to bolt across the park to get from one ride to another.

Too Cool for School

You Won’t Lose Your FastPass

Okay, so say you didn’t listen to my advice and you booked FastPasses on opposite sides of the park from one another in a short time window. Then, theoretically, you didn’t make it to the second ride. Don’t freak out, if you miss your FastPass window (and the grace period), you can hop back on to the app and there will be a new pass available for you tto book.

You Don’t HAVE to Use Your FastPass

If you get to a ride that you have a FastPass for and the wait is only 15 minutes, you can always pull up the app and cancel your FastPasses. Or, if you have a MagicBand, just don’t scan it! Once you’re in the line, ditch your reservation and pick something else.

The Biggest Secret, EVER!!!

What if I told you that you actually can get more than 3 free FastPasses? If you book your 3 Fastpass for early in the day, you can book another once you’ve tapped your MagicBand for the last one.

While you’re in line, open up the My Disney Experience app on your smartphone and book that 4th Fastpass! After you tap your band for your 4th ride, you can book a 5th FP, and so on. This Disney Fastpass secret will lead you to “unlimited” Fastpass possibilities for the rest of the day!

Amazing, right????

Another option is to stay at Club Level in certain Disney World resorts. You can pay $50 a day to get three more FastPasses. This will give you a 90-day window to book 6 FastPasses per day.

Research the Tiers for Rides

Did you know Disney rides are ranked into tiers? Rides that are in Tier 1 are the most popular and in demand, and typically the harder to FastPass for. Tier 2 rides and attractions are essentially everything else. When you pre-book your 3 Fastpasses, only one of them can be for a Tier 1 attraction.

Fortunately, Magic Kingdom doesn’t use this system so all of the rides are fair game. However, the other parks do, so you’ll need to plan accordingly.

Tier 1 Rides By Park

  • Animal Kingdom: Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey
  • Epcot: Soarin’, Frozen Ever After, and Test Rack
  • Hollywood Studios: Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster, Toy Story Mania!, Slinky Dog Dash, and Alien Swirling Saucers.

Book your #1 choice for first thing in the morning and then set up all other passes for the peak period of 10 AM to 3PM.

Don’t forget, you can actually book a 4th, 5th, and 6th FastPass! Once you’ve used your FastPass on a Tier 1 Ride, you can book another!

How to Meet Characters at Disney

Meeting Disney characters is one of the highlights of a child’s trip to Disney World. In fact, as soon as you tell your kiddo about your trip they’ll probably start dreaming of all of the characters they’ll get to meet.

It takes a bit of calculating to meet characters at Disney these days. I started visiting Disney when I was a kid and I remember queueing up to meet Mickey, Pooh, the Disney Princesses, and other characters. Things have changed since then, you have to be a bit more methodical. In this post, we’ll outline for you how to meet characters at Disney World.

How to Meet Characters at Disney

The Basics

Chances are, you won’t see a ton of characters wandering around the park. If you do, it not likely that they’ll stop for photos, autographs, or a chat. Instead, the characters at Disney World host meet and greets in fixed locations periodically throughout the day. The locations, and their times, are posted and can be found via the Disney World app.

The Big Wigs

The most popular characters require you lining up and waiting your turn for a meet and greet. You can actually use a FastPass to bypass the line for some of these characters. In fact, we strongly recommend using one of your FastPasses each day on a character meet and greet!

  • Cinderella and Elena at Princess Fairytale Hall
  • Rapunzel and Tiana at Princess Fairytale Hall

Animal Kingdom

The Adventurers Outpost has two greeting rooms that have two identical sets of characters so the lines move quickly. We had our very best character experience here! Mickey and Minnie took their time with the kids, they didn’t seem to be in any rush and they were so welcoming and playful.

Most of the year, this is the only place to meet Mickey and Minnie together at Animal Kingdom!

Character Meals

Character dining is a huge deal at Disney. During a character meet you get to chow down on some tasty (and pricey) food while the characters circulate the room making pitstops at each of the tales.

We got to ride the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel with Cinderella’s sister, Anastasia!

Pop Up Greetings

At each park, there are greetings that are a bit more sporadic. They’re typically only listed in the app or times guide. The greets can be as quick as 15 minutes or last for half-hour or more. This is where we’ve met characters like Mary Poppins, Cinderella’s step-sisters, Buzz Lightyear, Goofy, Donald, Chip, and Dale.

Where to Find Information About Meeting Characters

Park Map & Times Guide

Most people’s instinct will probably be to check the park map and times guide for meet and greets. Honestly, this is probably the worst place to start. While, yes, the map does have some character greeting locations listed for the fixed character greetings, it doesn’t give you many details regarding times.

The times guide actually lists out what times certain characters hold their meet and greets. However, it doesn’t include every character. But you do you know what does? The My Disney Experience app.

My Disney Experience App

The app is the holy grail to finding out all of the details on meeting characters in the park. The app is available for iPhones and Androids and is essential to planning out your trip. You can use the app to view the park map, check wait times for lines, book FastPasses, order meals, look at photos, and check out information for character meet and greets.

Character Meals

If you visit the Disney World dining website, you can filter for restaurants offering character meals relatively easily. Just click “Dining Experience” and select “Character Dining.” Be sure to read the descriptions carefully, some restaurants only have characters available during certain meals or time periods.

Dining reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance. Trust me, you’ll want to book these way ahead of time because they fill up quickly.

When to Meet Characters

Some characters are only available during extremely short windows of time. If that’s the case, and you’re absolutely dying to meet them, you’ll have to plan accordingly. Otherwise, you have a bit of flexibility.

We recommend meeting characters between noon and 6 PM. Why? This is the busiest time of the day at the park. The wait lines get really ridiculously long and you can use this time do other things like eat, meet characters, and catch a show.

Arrive Early. Plan on arriving at least 5 to 10 minutes before the character. Many guests aren’t as savvy as you and might not know when and where the characters will be. As soon as they spot them they’ll haul ass to try and meet them.

Tips for Your Meet and Greet

You’ll want to have these things handy when you meet the characters: a camera, an autograph book, and a large pen. The larger pens make it easier for gloved characters (like Mickey and Minnie) to hold. Not all characters can sign autographs, but it is great to have the pens on hand, just in case.

A professional photographer will be on hand to capture your meet and greet. You’ll be able to view and order these photos via the app.

If there isn’t a photographer, the character’s handler will be able to take a photo using your phone or camera.

Disney Springs Has 20+ Totally Awesome Kid-Friendly Things to Do

Disney Springs is essentially an outdoor mall and entertainment complex following many of the Town Center models found in most cities. It features countless Disney themed stores, as well as other shops and restaurants centered around Lake Buena Vista. There’s also a splash pad, train ride, hot air balloon ride, movie theatre, bowling alley, and a ton of other really cool things!

The Layout

  • The West Side– Tons of restaurants, AMC Movie Theatre, and Splitsville Bowling Alley
  • Town Center– Over 30 shops plus more dining options
  • The Landing- More restaurants and shopping
  • Marketplace- Shops, restaurants, splash pad, train, carousel. and more kid-friendly stuff.

Kid-Friendly Things to do at Disney Springs

Build LEGO

Outside of the LEGO store, there are large bins of LEGO where kids can build whatever their heart desires. There are even racetracks where they can race their LEGO vehicles. This is a free activity however, there are tons of AMAZING LEGO kits available for purchase inside.

Take Photos with “Characters” and Lego Figurines

There are some unbelievable LEGO sculptures on the property. Grab your camera, pick your favorite filter, and Instagram away! There are also some pretty alright Disney Statues, as well. Sure, they aren’t real characters, but kids still love taking photos with them.

Splash Pad

There is a free splash pad located in the Marketplace section of Disney Springs. It’s nestled near the Earl of Sandwich and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.  Be sure to pack your kids suits!  This is the perfect way to cool down and break up the day at Disney Springs!

Carousel

Isn’t it crazy how much kids love carousels? I mean, it’s truly one of those things that has stood the test of time. For just $3 a pop our kiddo can hop on the Venetian carousel and go for a bit of a whirl.

Train Ride

Choo choo! All aboard! Located in the Marketplace area of Disney Springs there is a small train perfect for little kids. Don’t worry grown ups, you can ride too! Rides are just $3. The train departs from just outside of the Star Wars Trading Post.

Face Painting

There is a popular face painting kiosk in the Marketplace. You can select from a menu of options or have a custom design painted. If you can dream it, they can do it.

Aerophile- Hot Air Balloon Ride

If your family is feeling a bit more brave, you can check out the Aerophile. This hot air balloon is the largest tethered helium balloon. The balloon will soar up to 400 feet giving you amazing views of Lake Buena Vista and the surrounding area. The cost is $15/child and $20/adult. The ride is located in the West Side of Disney Springs near Splitsville.

Catch a Movie

Okay, so maybe soaring in the air isn’t your thing. If you want to try something a bit more low-key (and air-conditioned!!), check out the AMC Dine-In Movie Theatre. You read that right, Dine-In! You can feast on delicious food while you catch a film- and escape the heat.

Food options include nachos, wings, sushi, loaded brisket fries, salads, wraps, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, churros, ice cream sundaes, and more.

Splitsville Bowling Alley

Dude, this place is MASSIVE! It offers 50,000 square feet of bowling, pool tables, live entertainment, food, and air conditioning. They serve pizza, burgers, sushi, and appetizers. They also serve beer, wine, and specialty drinks.

NBA Experience

Alright sports fans, this one is for you! Get in the game at this basketball themed venue. There are 13 interactive activities including dribbling and skills courts, the Replay Center, and arcade style games.

 

Inside Rainforest Cafe

Rainforest Cafe

Your kids will love the fun rainforest and jungle theme at the Rainforest Cafe. Just wait until you see their reaction when the rainforest comes alive for a thunderstorm! The restaurant serves American cuisine such as shrimp tacos, steak, ribs, burgers, pulled pork sandwiches, turkey wrap, and more. Reservations are recommended.  

T-Rex Restaurant

The restaurants pretty much explain themselves at Disney Springs…don’t they? So, obviously, this is a dinosaur themed restaurant. Your kids will freak out over the prehistoric atmosphere. There is also a giant sandpit with bones for them to excavate. If they are lucky, they may even find jewels! Menu items include nachos, flatbread, pasta, shrimp, salmon, meatloaf, ribs, chicken, steak, and burgers. Reservations are recommended.

Planet Hollywood

Disney Springs is also home to the infamous Planet Hollywood! If you’re a fan of the Food Network, make sure you pop in to try one of Guy Fieri’s burgers. Trust me, they are legit!

Build a Dino

Speaking of dinosaurs, there is a Build a Dino shop where kids can create their own dinosaur (like Build A Bear only…more ferocious).

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

If your little one isn’t the dirt under their fingers, dino-loving type, perhaps the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is more up their alley. Kids 3-12 are welcome to visit this fancy schmancy salon to get made over into princesses or knights. Reservations are strongly recommended. You can reserve your time slot up to 180 days before your visit.

Shopping

Okay….so normally kids don’t love shopping, but this is shopping Walt style. They will be amazed at all of the super cool Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars toys!

Here are some that your kiddo’s will probably love:

  • Word of Disney (the largest Disney character store on the globe…and probably the universe)
  • Marvel Super Hero Headquarters
  • Disney Style
  • Once Upon a Toy
  • The LEGO Store
  • Star Wars Trading Post
  • Star Wars Galactic Outpost

World of Disney

Yes…this is a store, but it’s not just any store. It’s a store that stands above all of the rest. The World of Disney is the largest Disney character store in the world! If you only go into one store while you’re in Disney Springs, it should be this one! It’s remarkable. It’s the perfect place to shop for Disney souvenirs, Mickey Ears, stuffed animals, clothes, toys, and even kitchen decor!

The Candy Cauldron

This show kitchen lets visitors catch a glimpse of how Disney’s iconic candy creations are made. Of course, you can pick up some goodies, as well.  The candy apples are iconic and to die for! Other classic confections include chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallow wands, Rice Krispie Treats, cupcakes, and pre-packaged treats.

Goofy’s Candy Shop

This place is heaven. Not only do they serve candy but they also serve Rice Krispie Treats, cake pops, cupcakes,  candy apples, flavored popcorn,  fudge, and other sweet treats and baked goods.

Sprinkles Bakery

This cupcake shop features made from scratch cupcakes. The flavor combinations are out of this world! Some favorites include, red velvet,  sprinkle, black and white, salty caramel, and triple cinnamon.  There is even a cupcake ATM! You can also get ice cream, cookies, and coffee drinks here.

The Best Times to Visit Disney World (and the WORST!)

What are the best times to visit Disney to avoid the crowds, you might ask. Each year millions of people flock to Central Florida to visit Disney. In fact, there is an average annual attendance of more than 58 million people! With millions of people visiting the parks each year….is there ever a good time to head to the House of Mouse?

In short, the answer is yes! There are both good and bad times to visit the Happiest Place on Earth. Disney World can be absolutely magical or absolutely miserable depending on when you choose to go.

The Worst Times to Visit Disney World

Let’s kick our list off with dates that you absolutely want to avoid hitting the park.

Spring Break

Florida is a haven for Spring Breakers. Both school age kids and college age kids head to the Sunshine State to enjoy their Spring Break. This means that the parks tended to be crowded between Mid-March to Mid-April.

If you don’t have any other choice, the good news is the weather tends to be more mild in the spring months.

The Summer Months

Sure…if you’re traveling with kids this might seem like the ideal time to visit since they’ll probably be out of school however, don’t do it. Not only are your kids out of school, but so are almost everyone else’s. Not only that, summers in Florida SUCK. Even as a Florida girl, the heat and humidity along with large crowds, and long lines sounds completely unbearable.

Pro-Tip: The Disney parks tend to clear out when the skies open up! People start hitting the parking lot as soon as it starts to rain.

If you must visit Disney during the summer, don’t let the rain scare you. It rains pretty much every afternoon here in the summer. The storms typically clear pretty quickly. Just duck inside a shop or a restaurant and wait it out.

Better yet? Head to the park even if you know it’ll be a rainy day! Grab a poncho and the park will be (almost) all yours!

The Last Two Weeks of December

Hear me out, here. Yes, these weeks are absolutely jam packed with holiday fun and typically the weather is much cooler however… the place gets ridiculously crowded. In fact, it is not uncommon for Magic Kingdom to reach capacity during Christmas week. What’s the capacity, you ask? 57,000 people. That’s a shit ton of people waiting around in lines.

If you want to see what all of the holiday fuss is about, go during the first week of December.

National Holidays

Easter, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and other national holidays tend to draw large crowds.

The Best Times to Visit Disney World

Weekdays

Whenever possible, hit the park on a weekday. Many travelers are just in the area for the long weekend. Tuesdays through Thursdays tend to be rather slower.

The Best Months to Visit

January (with the exception of MLK weekend and the Disney Marathon Weekend), February (with the exception of President’s Day and the Princess Half Marathon Weekend), late April, September (after Labor Day Weekend), October (the weekends can get busy due to Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival).

January

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend (January 6 to 10). This is now a virtual event.

EPCOT International Festival of the Arts (January 8 to February 22).

February

Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend (February 18 to 21). This is now a virtual event.

EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival (March to June)

April

Star Wars Rival Run Half Marathon Weekend (April 15 to 18)

This weekend features iconic rivalries from the popular movie series Star Wars. Events include the Star Wars 5K, Star Wars 10K, Star Wars Rival Run Challenge and the runDisney Kids Races, as well as the headlining half marathon.

August Through December

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (Dates TBD).

Taking place on select nights throughout the fall is one of Disney’s most popular events. Highlights include Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade, Disney’s Not So Spooky Spectacular fireworks show and Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular. Disney characters dress up in Halloween costumes and kids can trick-or-treat in the park.

The party is not included with regular admission to Magic Kingdom and requires a separate ticket.

EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival (Dates TBD).

This is one of our favorite Disney events! The festival features more than 25 international marketplace kiosks, which offer tapas-sized portions of regional specialties, as well as recommended wine and beer pairings. 

Our favorite part is the Eat to the Beat! Concert Series that features my favorite band, Hanson, every year.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (Dates TBD).

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, is a special event held on select nights each winter at Magic Kingdom. The party runs from 7pm until midnight. Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade, Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration castle stage show, Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime fireworks and magical snowfall over Main Street, U.S.A. are some of the event’s highlights.

Dining at Rainforest Cafe with Kids

Our family has been quarantined since the beginning of March. This weekend we did the unthinkable- we visited Disney Springs during COVID-19. Let me begin by saying we haven’t been out to eat at any restaurants, the kids haven’t been in any stores, and Ashley and I only run out to grab the essentials. We’ve been very careful about social distancing and are taking all of the precautions necessary to keep our kids safe. The fact that we ate at the Rainforest Cafe during our visit is a pretty big deal.

What is Disney Springs?

Disney Springs is essentially an outdoor mall and entertainment complex following many of the Town Center models found in most cities. It features countless Disney themed stores, as well as other shops and restaurants centered around Lake Buena Vista. It is a great place to get the “Disney Experience” without stepping foot in the theme park.

You could seriously spend a couple of days hanging out here and never get bored! There is a ton of things to do ranging from a bowling alley to a movie theatre, shops, and even boat rentals!

What is Rainforest Cafe?

The Rainforest Cafe is a kid-friendly restaurant chain that is sensory overload! From the minute you walk up to the volcano-shaped structure, you’re transformed into the rainforest. From the sounds of wild animals echoing through the building, to the rainstorms and orante decor- this place has it all.

Where is Disney Springs and Rainforest Cafe located?

Physical address: 1800 Buena Vista Dr, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

Park in the Lime or Grapefruit parking garage for the closest access. Head right (towards the Marketplace) and you will quickly notice the giant volcano near the lake. That volcano is Rainforest Cafe!

Our Thoughts on Rainforest Cafe

The Rainforest Cafe has a super fun kid-friendly vibe. When we walk into traditional restaurants, the kids aren’t really all that excited. But one look inside of this place had them grinning ear to ear! They loved being able to watch the fish swim by in the massive and gorgeous tanks. They loved the fact that there were robotic animals screeching or roaring all around us. There were periodic “thunderstorms” while we were in the restaurant that scared our boys (aged 2). The animals all around us got loud and there was “thunder” and “lightning”. Our son, 82, is terrified by storms so he cried each time one started. Fortunately for him, the “storms” lasted for only about a minute.

The waitstaff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Our food came out pretty quickly. Our kids (6, 2, and 2) were so captivated by their surroundings that they didn’t mind the short wait. The menu is perfectly tailored to a child’s taste and isn’t ridiculously pricey like you might expect. We spent $100 on a turkey wrap, shrimp tacos, 2 kids meals, and 2 alcoholic beverages, which honestly isn’t bad- especially in a touristy area.

This is a perfect place to grab dinner as a family, especially if you’re in town to visit the theme parks. Be sure to spend some time exploring Disney Springs while you’re here, it has a ton of great things to do with the kids.

The wait here can get pretty long, I strongly suggest making reservations in advance.

Disney Springs During COVID-19

Our family has been quarantined since the beginning of March. This weekend we did the unthinkable- we visited Disney Springs during COVID-19.

Let me begin by saying we haven’t been out to eat at any restaurants, the kids haven’t been in any stores, and Ashley and I only run out to grab the essentials. We’ve been very careful about social distancing and are taking all of the precautions necessary to keep our kids safe.

We haven’t stayed entirely at the house- we’ve been exploring the local parks like the Castaway Island Preserve, Fort Clinch State Park, and the Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens. We’ve also visited the Jacksonville Zoo nearly every week since they’ve been very cautious.

After doing a bit of research, we decided to venture out to Disney Springs during our mini-vacation to central Florida.

What is Disney Springs?

Disney Springs is essentially an outdoor mall and entertainment complex following many of the Town Center models found in most cities. It features countless Disney themed stores, as well as other shops and restaurants centered around Lake Buena Vista.

What precautions is Disney Springs taking for COVID-19?

  • Masks are required for everyone 2 and older. This rule applies to not only in the stores but in the outdoor areas as well. This is strictly enforced. You may remove masks while eating or drinking. There are several places where you can social distance, remove your masks, and simply breathe.
  • All visitors have their temperature checked before entering the property. When we arrived (in the late afternoon) there was no wait time. Several staff members were on hand to check your temperature.
  • There are hand sanitizer stations at the entrance of every shop and restaurant.
  • At the entrance to each shop and restaurant, a “cast member” is keeping track of how many people enter the building.
  • There are reminders posted everywhere about maintaining social distancing. There are also markers on the ground indicating which way to walk (in some areas).

Did we feel safe?

In a word, yes.  We were very impressed by all of the precautions that Disney has taken to keep its patrons safe.  Honestly, every single person that we passed (that was over two) was wearing a mask.  Even little toddlers being pushed around in strollers were wearing masks.  We took advantage of the countless hand sanitizer stations and washed our hands before we ate.  Honestly, everywhere you looked there was someone wiping down a surface.  It was quite impressive.

The only times we didn’t have our masks on is when we were rehydrating, sharing a Dole Whip (mmm, Dole Whip), and when we ate dinner at Rainforest Café.  We did find a place by Lake Buena Vista where no one else was around so we were able to sit down, take our masks off, and cool down a moment.

I will say that wearing a mask for long periods of time in the Florida heat is uncomfortable, and this is coming from a pro-mask Florida girl.  Keep in mind that although the thermometer might read 95, you have to take into account the humidity.  Florida, in the summers, can be miserable.  I imagine that it is even more unbearable for people who are not accustomed to high humidity.  Make sure that you stay well hydrated, especially since you’ll be required to wear a mask.

Our Thoughts on Disney Springs

Disney Springs is a great place to visit if you want a watered-down version of the Disney experience, without the steep ticket price.  This, by no means, means that Disney Springs is cheap.  We bought the kids each a stuffed animal (that was “on-sale”) and they were $25 each.  We also had dinner at Rainforest Café and spent $100 on a turkey wrap, shrimp tacos, 2 kids meals, and 2 alcoholic beverages.

This is a fantastic location to pick up souvenirs.  There are a ton of Disney themed stores that offer anything you can think of; candy, kitchen accessories, clothes, toys, bags, etc. Be sure to check out the World of Disney store- it’s the largest Disney store on the planet.
