“Do I Need to Book an Excursion in Aruba?” This is a question that I get asked a lot. Quite frankly, there are some cruise ports where you absolutely must book an excursion, and then there are others where you really don’t have to.

What is an Excursion?
An excursion is an activity that you book in a cruise port. The excursions range from historic tours, snorkeling and beach tours, visits to popular attractions, activities that will get your adrenaline pumping, and cultural activities. They are booked through local tour companies and cost additional money. Excursions can go from anywhere from $39 to hundreds of dollars for scuba diving, golfing, and helicopter tours.
Do I Need to Book an Excursion in Aruba?
You could definitely get away without booking an excursion in Aruba. If you’re looking to just hit the beaches, you can easily grab a cab and head for the sand on your own. The beaches here are incredible but there is so much more to Aruba than just white sand beaches and turquoise water.
Aruba has a ton of incredible things to do. There’s a rad ostrich farm (yes… you read that right), a gorgeous lighthouse, some super cool rock formations with prehistoric carvings, a rocky desert, and of course the former “Natural Bridge“. If you stick to just the beaches, you’ll miss out.

Eagle Beach
This is probably the most iconic tourist beach. It is the widest beach on the island and popular due to its proximity to bars and restaurants. This is also a favorite location for those that are into water sports.
Drulf Beach, Divi Beach, & Manchebo Beach
These beaches are all pretty much next to each other. They all feature wide expansive white sand beaches. Although there are some rocks here, the water here is fantastic. Food and drink options are a little limited.
Surfside Beach
This beach has clear, calm waters, and a fun vibe perfect for families. The beach is home to bars, restaurants, and Splash Park Aruba. Splash Park Aruba is an inflatable waterpark full of slides, obstacle courses, bridges, and other inflatable toys.
Pro-Tip: Beach palapas are on public property meaning anyone can use them free of charge. Palapas are the little grass beach umbrella stands.

All Inclusive Sailaway Snorkel by Pirate Ship
Hop aboard a 110-foot schooner and cruise along Aruba’s stunning coastline. You’ll make a pitstop where you can snorkel on one of Aruba’s gorgeous reefs. The next step is the Antilla shipwreck, a WWII German freighter that is the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean.
North Coast Jeef Safari
There is nothing cooler than four-wheeling in the desert. Hold on tight and prepare for the ride of a lifetime! This tour will take you to the Donkey Sanctuary (we can’t make this stuff up), the Ayo Rock Formations, the collapsed Natural Bridge, Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, Chapel of Alto Vista, and the California Lighthouse. This is an awesome way to see the best of Aruba. There are variations of this tour that include snorkeling opportunities.

4×4 Natural Pool Swim & Snorkel Safari
On this excursion, you’ll hit the dirt trails and go off-roading…after all, it’s the only way to access the Natural Pool in Arikok National Park. Once you reach the Natural Pool, you’ll be able to swim or snorkel in the gorgeous water. The tour also stops by the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, Baby Natural Bridge, and visit the California Lighthouse.
Best of Aruba Island Tour
If four-wheeling isn’t your thing, don’t worry. This tour is done in an air-conditioned motor coach (which is wayyyyy more comfortable than an open-air safari vehicle!). This tour visits the Alto Vista Chapel, and the Casibari Rock Formations. You’ll also get to see the Baby Natural Bridge and the California Lighthouse.
Top 10 Best of Aruba
This tour is much more slow-paced. On the way to the Natural Bridge and Baby Bridge, you’ll stop by the Casibari Rock Formation. You’ll also head to the northwestern part of the island to the California Lighthouse and Eagle Beach.

Grand Turk is the perfect cruise port to kick back and relax. Like, Half Moon Cay, Mahogany Bay and Costa Maya, the Grand Turk cruise port has been developed as a haven by the cruise industry. The ship docks at an absolutely stunning beach that is surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants, and a pool.
Another great thing about Grand Turk is the fact that there are never more than 2 cruise ships in port, meaning that it doesn’t get too terribly crowded like some other ports like, say, Nassauor Cozumel. Still, the port area isn’t that large so if you are looking to score one of the beach chairs that you see from the decks of your ship, you’ll want to get off the ship ASAP.
5 Things to do in Grand Turk While on a Cruise
Beach Day
Without question, this is the #1 most popular thing for cruisers to do when in Grand Turk. After all, the beaches here are some of the most stunning in the world! The beach by the pier is lined with gorgeous palm trees and a plethora of beach chairs. The sugary sand leads to crystal clear water.
There is an absolutely perfect beach right off the pier when you dock in Grand Turk.
Believe it or not, all of this is within a short walking distance from the cruise ships and you don’t have to spend a penny! That’s right, you don’t have to worry about cab fares or chair rental fees at this beach.
If you’re planning on spending time on the beach and are traveling with a large group, you’ll want to get off the ship early so that you can snag beach chairs close to each other. Most beachgoers are inclined to grab the beach chairs closest to the water. Sure, you’re close to the water…but this also puts you further away from the shade. We prefer to grab lounge chairs towards the back– they are closer to the shade, to the bathrooms, and to the restaurants…and bars.
Island Tour
Did you know that many people believe that Grand Turk was the first land Christopher Columbus spotted back in 1492? Whenever we visit a destination for the first time, we love taking island tours. Grand Turk has an interesting history and is home to a ton of wild horses and donkeys that you’ll most likely spot roaming the streets and beaches. We even saw a donkey’s head peeking out of the window of someone’s home!
The Grand Turk Lighthouse and Salt Salinas were pretty cool to see.
Guided tours can be booked through the cruise line or through a private company.
Wastin’ Away Again in Margaritaville

If you’re looking for something a bit more lively, you can search for your lost shaker of salt at Margaritaville. The bar and restaurant is located right on the beach and is just a short distance from the pier. They even have several large swimming pools with swim up bars!
We suggest trying the Volcano Nachos, Jerk BBQ Pork Tacos, the margaritas, and of course, the key lime pie! The food is a little pricey but hey, you’re on vacation!
Hit the Pools or try out FlowRider
One of the main attractions at the Grand Turk Cruise Center, aside from the beach, is the FlowRider. Try your hand at surfing, body, or kneeboarding on this wave simulator. The minimum height is 55 inches.
The complex also has a massive pool, adjacent to Margaritaville. It’s the perfect spot to hang out for the day.

Snorkeling or Diving
While you can absolutely snorkel at the beach right next to the ship, there are lots of other great spots to snorkel on the island. The water surrounding the island is crystal clear and teaming with sea turtles, stingrays, tropical fish, sponges, and coral.
We suggest booking a tour that takes you to the Grand Turk Wall. This area is known as the Grand Canyon of the Caribbean. Divers come from all over the world to check out this 7,000-foot deep trench.
If diving isn’t your thing, but you’d like to snorkel nearby, we suggest hitting up Governor’s Beach.

Disney World is truly a place for everyone! Honestly, nobody is too young or too old to visit the House of Mouse. There is something there for everyone to enjoy. Many people think that toddlers are too young to enjoy Disney, but boy are they wrong! Since kids under the age of 3 get in for free, they are the perfect age to visit the theme park. Ya’ll! This is my favorite Disney World ride! Blast off into outer space and help Buzz defeat Emperor Zurg and his army of bad guys. This ride is just like being trapped in the middle of a live-action video game. You’ll board a two-seater spaceship equipped with laser guns which you’ll use to blast targets to earn points.
Pro-Tip: Seat your kids on the right to give them an opportunity to score more points. Or don’t and totally kick their butts!
Dumbo the Flying Elephant
Height Requirement: Any Height
This high-flying, classic ride seats two passengers per elephant. You’ll soar high into the air and gently dip down. This ride is sure to bring out a ton of giggles!
The indoor portion of the ride queue is an air-conditioned play area that will help keep your kiddo occupied while you wait in line.
Pro-Tip: Get a FastPass+ for this ride early in the day. This ride is perfect for photo ops! You can also ride it later in the day when your toddler needs the ability to run around a little bit.
It’s a Small World
Height Requirement: Any Height
Like the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride (below), this iconic ride is a slow-moving indoor boat ride. Take a 10-minute, fully air conditioned, trip “around the world” in this fan favorite attraction. Yes…the song will get stuck in your head but the air conditioning and ability to kickback and relax will be an welcomed relief.
Pro-Tip: Use a FastPass+ and book this ride mid-day. It’s a great way to escape the heat.
Disney World Rides for Toddlers: Mad Tea Party Ride

This was the first ride we rode at Disney World as a family. It was an amazing way to kick off our trip, and introduce our kids to the magic of Disney. On this two-minute ride, you’ll hop into a tea cup and whirl around. Sound sickening? It’s not horrible. Riders control the speed and direction of the tea cups— you’re able to make it slow down, if needed.
Disney World Rides for Toddlers: Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride

Height Requirement: Any Height
Similar to the Dumbo ride, the Magic Carpets of Aladdin bob up and down offering you aerial views of the park. The main difference between this ride and Dumbo is that Dumbo seats only 2 people whereas the Magic Carpets seat 4. Also, there is a joystick that allows you to control the up and down movements of the ride. Pretty rad, right?
Pro-Tip: Ride at night for absolutely spectacular views.
In Line at the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Seriously, this ride is a gift from the Disney gods! Your toddler will love it! The queue is lined with interactive play areas including drums, a super cool digital wall, and all kinds of Hundred Acre Wood inspired hands-on activities.
The ride itself is a six-seater honey pot “roller coaster” that stars Pooh Bear, Tigger, Piglet, and the gang. There are parts of the ride that are dark, but our toddlers didn’t seem to mind.
The ride is four-minutes long and the lines can get lengthy. With all of the interactive activities, your toddler probably won’t mind.
Peter Pan’s Flight
Height Requirement: Any Height
Climb aboard a flying pirate ship and venture off to Neverland with Peter Pan. This classic Disney tale comes to life as you fly to the home of the Lost Boys.
Pro-Tip: Get a FastPass+! This is one of the most popular rides at Disney. Book your Fastpass+ ASAP.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Height Requirement: Any Height
If your kids are anything like mine, they will love this ride. Our kids are obsessed with boats and pirates! I thought that this ride might be a little too dark and scary for the twins but they loved the slow-moving boat ride and the music that went along with it.
Yo-ho, yo-ho, it’s a pirate boat adventure ride for the entire family! Kids will love the pirate aspect of it and parents will enjoy it too! The ride lasts 8.5 minutes- that’s almost 10 minutes of relaxing in air conditioning.
Pro-Tip: Use a FastPass+ and book this ride mid-day. It’s a great way to escape the heat.
Note: There is a little waterfall drop at the end and the ride is dark compared to most other indoor rides.
Disney World Rides for Toddlers: Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel

Listen, I was honestly skeptical about taking the kiddos on the carousel. I mean, we have a carousel at home. But they absolutely loved the Prince Charming Regal Carousel. There is something magical about riding up and down on a gallant steed in front of Cinderella’s castle.
Pro-Tip: The ride lasts less than two minutes and the lines are fast-moving (which is great because it’s not shaded). Visit early in the morning or late in the day for a minimal wait.
The Barnstormer
Height Requirement: 35″
This popular Goofy-themed kid-friendly rollercoaster is a favorite with young kids.
Tomorrowland Speedway
Height Requirement: 32″ to ride, 54″ inches to ride solo
It’s time to hit the track! Zip around the Tomorrowland Speedway in a super awesome racecar! Kids will love the feeling of “driving” around the track.
Pro-Tip: Space Mountain is right next door. If you have someone in your group who is dying to ride Space Mountain, this is a great place for the younger kids to hang out until they are done riding!
Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover
Height Requirement: Any Height
Growing up this was one of my favorite rides at Disney. It still is, but now for a totally different reason. Parents, let me introduce you to the “Sleeper Mover”…ugh sorry, People Mover. This is the perfect place to unwind, sit down, relax, and possibly catch a quick nap. You’ll go on a slow, 10-minute ride through Tomorrowland. There are even some dark parts (BONUS!) to help your little one relax a bit more.
Pro-Tip: Space Mountain is right next door. If you have someone in your group who is dying to ride Space Mountain, this is a great place for the younger kids to hang out until they are done riding!
Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid
Height Requirement: Any Height
Travel beneath the surface of the ocean as you join Ariel on her quest to meet her prince charming. You’ll join her for five-and-a-half-minutes on board a three-seater clamshell. Toddlers will love all of the vibrant colors, bubbles, and popular songs.

It’s really wild driving through Cockburn Town and driving past donkeys strutting down the street.

Do I Need to Book an Excursion in Grand Turk?
Grand Turk is definitely one of the cruise ports where you do not have to book an excursion. Quite honestly, there isn’t much to do on the island, aside from the beaches. On my first visit to the island, I did an island tour and it’s really quite barren.
If you’re looking for the perfect way to spend the day in Grand Turk, it just might be staying at the cruise area. The area as been developed as a mecca for travelers. It is home to Margaritaville, Harley Davidson Clothing, Starbucks, Ron John Surf Shop, and a badass pool. There is also a magnificent beach lined with beach chairs.
Pro-Tip: We suggest getting off the ship early and claiming one of the chairs on the back row. Sure, it might be a little further from the water but it’s closer to the bars, restaurants, and there is shade from the palm trees.
There is an absolutely perfect beach right off the pier when you dock in Grand Turk.
Nearby Beaches
Sure, there’s a gorgeous free beach right at the end of the pier, but perhaps you’re looking to get away from the crowd. We suggest checking out these fabulous beaches. You do not need to book beach excursions in Grand TUrk. The teaches are really easy to get to via taxi and there is an amazing beach right off the ship.
Cockburn Town Beach
First up is Cockburn Town Beach. This public beach is south of the cruise port. It is absolutely majestic and serene. It’s hard to believe this is a public beach! The waters here are crystal clear and then quickly transition to a deep, dark blue where the water plummets to 7,000 feet deep. This trench attracts divers from all over the world.
The Shipwreck at Governor’s Beach, Grand Turk

This beach is absolutely incredible! This is the site of the Mega One Triton Shipwreck, which means a pretty rad backdrop. The further you get from the shipwreck, the quieter the beach becomes. The water here is crystal clear and full of marine life. This is a great spot to snorkel!

Pillory Beach
The northwestern part of the island is home to Pillory Beach. The beach is located near a popular resort so there are food and drinks available nearby (it’s a little pricey, though). There are also beach chairs, paddleboards, and snorkeling equipment available for rent from the resort. The snorkeling here is great so bring your snorkel gear or plan on renting some!
Columbus Landfall National Park
Lastly, the Columbus Landfall National Park is not to be missed for history buffs. This is the largest protected area on Grand Turk. The National Park contains many of the best beaches on Grand Turk, including Governor’s Beach, Cockburn Town Beach, Pillory Beach, and the Cruise Center Beach (where the ship docks).
As the name suggests, this location is thought to be where Christopher Columbus first made landfall in the Americas.

To be honest, there aren’t a ton of excursions in Grand Turk. As I said before, the island is still developing as a tourist destination. The island was also hit by both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria and received a significant amount of damage. However, if you want to book excursions in Grand Turk, here are our favorites.
Top 10 Best of Grand Turk
We first visited the island before the cruise area was developed. We booked this tour so that we could check out all this island has to offer. Board an open air safari truck and travel through historic Cockburn Town. You’ll visit Her Royal Majesty Prison, a stunning lighthouse, the space capsule and other local highlights.
Stingray and Snorkel Excursion
On this excursion, you’ll join a guided snorkel tour around a gorgeous reef. Just one peek underwater and you’ll understand why people come from all over the globe to snorkel and dive in these waters! This tour will also take you to the uninhabited island of Gibbs Cay. The waters surrounding the cay are home to wild stingrays that come to feed.
Underwater Power Scooter & Beach Break
This tour takes you to the Bajari Beach Club where you’ll be fitted with snorkel gear. From there, it’s a short boat ride to the edge of the famous 7000-foot wall called the Columbus Passage. Columbus Passage, also known as Turks Passage, is a deep channel known for being one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in the world. Thousands of sea turtles, eagle rays, fish, and even whales frequent the passage! You’ll be able to explore the area using a hand-held power scooter before heading to the beach to dry off.
Whale Watching
Next up, whale watching. Yes…WHALE WATCHING! Between January and April, more than 1500 Humpback whales pass through the Columbus Passage on their way to warmer waters where they’ll give birth. Grand Turk sees lots of whale activity so perhaps you’ll get lucky! Trust me, seeing whales in the wild is absolutely incredible!
Poolside Cabana Rental
Lastly, if you don’t want to travel far from the port area, yet don’t want to deal with all of the people, you can rent your own poolside cabana! Each cabana comes furnished with a table and comfortable seating. There is also a small covered deck overlooking the pool. Waiter service is available courtesy of Margaritaville.

With the purchase of all Disney World tickets, you get 3 free FastPasses a day! Yes, free! A FastPass means that you are reserving your spot for a ride or attraction during a one hour window of time. Now, this doesn’t mean you won’t be standing in line, it just means that it will be a much shorter line.
We like to use them to secure spots for 2 rides and 1 character meet and greet.
How Do You Get FastPass+?
Once you purchase your park tickets, or if you have an annual pass, you can set up your FastPasses. You can use the My Disney Experience app, or the My Disney Experience section of the Disney World website. You can also hit up one of the kiosks in the parks.

When Can You Book FastPass+?
You can book your FastPass+ slots 30 days in advance, or 60 days in advance if you are staying at a Disney Resort. The earlier you try to book these time slots, the more likely you’ll be able to reserve your favorite ride. Some Fastpasses go quickly! The time slots become available at 7 AM EST so set your alarm!

Book Your FastPass For the Busiest Time of the Day
One of the best secrets to Disney FastPasses is knowing when to use the pass. The best time to use your FastPasses is when the park is the busiest. Makes sense, right? More people in the park = longer wait times. The best window of time to book your FastPasses is from 10 AM to 3 PM when the park is hoppin’.
The lines before 10 AM won’t be too outrageous since the park is just opening. They also decrease after 3 PM when people head back to their hotels to escape the crowds of hot Florida heat.
Pick the Most Popular Rides First!
Obviously, FastPasses for the most popular rides are going to get snagged first. Booking the hardest rides first is a quick and easy Fastpass secret that people may not even think of. The most popular rides, right now, are Frozen Ever After, Flight of Passage, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Slinky Dog Dash.
Book your FastPass for these rides later in the day– chances are, there will be more FastPasses available.
If you are dying to ride one of these rides, and don’t have a FastPass, you should plan on spending at least an hour waiting in line.
Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride
Use Single Rider To Save Your Disney Fastpasses For Other Attractions
If you can’t resist some of the big kid/adult rides that your toddler or kid can’t go on- don’t worry, Disney has a plan! They have a system called Rider Switch Passes. See a cast member at one of the qualifying rides and they’ll hand you a Rider Switch Pass. Basically, one grown-up waits in line and goes on the ride while the other grown-up hangs out with the kids. Once, they’ve exited the ride, you pass off the kids and they hand you the pass. You get to ride the ride without having to wait in line again! Holla!
If just one of you wants to ride one of these rides, some rides offer a single rider line. Basically, you’ll fill in any empty seats on the ride. There are 4 rides in Disney World that offer single rider lines. They are Expedition Everest, Test Track, Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster, and Millennium Falcon Smuggler’s Run.
This is also a great option if you don’t mind splitting up with your group! You and your travel companions can all do this, ride the ride with some random person, and meet back up!
Refresh Your App To See If Your Desired Fastpass Comes Available
If there’s a ride you must do or a princess you must meet but can’t find a Fastpass for it, don’t give up. People cancel their Fastpasses because their kids are having a meltdown, or decide they want to ride another ride, or change their mind for a plethora or reasons. The minute someone forfeits their FastPass, it becomes available for someone else to snag. That someone could be you!
Just keep refreshing the app!
Check the morning of your visit (since people modify their selections the night before or even early that morning!). Also check after 10 AM because people may decide to alter their plans.
Think Things Out
When you pre-arrange your FastPasses, you’ll want to make sure they are near each other. Do yourself a favor and scope out a park map before you book your passes. If you’re hitting up Space Mountain at noon and then Splash Mountain at 1:15, you’re going to have to haul ass from Tomorrowland clear across the park to Frontierland.
It would make so much more sense to cluster rides like Space Mountain, Tomorrowland Speedway, and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin together.
Peter Pan’s Flight, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Character Meet & Greets also make a great trio!
Not Everyone in Your Group Needs to Use the Same FastPasses
Anyone over the age of 13 can manage their own FastPasses. If half of your group wants to ride Splash Mountain, and the other half wants to take it easy on Pirates of the Caribbean, you can choose which people will use which FastPasses.
Be Smart About How You Use your FastPass
Remember, you only get 3 FastPasses that you can pre-book (more on why I say “Pre-book” in a minute). Think of these 3 FastPasses as a precious gift. For the love of God, do not waste them on silly things like parades, fireworks, or unpopular rides. It’s not that Dumbo, the Magic Carpets of Aladdin, It’s a Small World, and the Monster’s Inc. Laugh Floor aren’t great attractions, because they are… they just aren’t worth using a FastPass for.

Your FastPass window is actually an hour-long. This means you can arrive at the ride or attraction any time within that hour long window and be let in.
If you’re early for everything, like me, you can arrive 5 minutes before your FastPass window opens. Or…if you’re one of those people who is late for everything, you can arrive 15 minutes after your window. This comes in handy if you’re fighting over what rides to use your FastPass on and you have to bolt across the park to get from one ride to another.
Too Cool for School
You Won’t Lose Your FastPass
Okay, so say you didn’t listen to my advice and you booked FastPasses on opposite sides of the park from one another in a short time window. Then, theoretically, you didn’t make it to the second ride. Don’t freak out, if you miss your FastPass window (and the grace period), you can hop back on to the app and there will be a new pass available for you tto book.
You Don’t HAVE to Use Your FastPass
If you get to a ride that you have a FastPass for and the wait is only 15 minutes, you can always pull up the app and cancel your FastPasses. Or, if you have a MagicBand, just don’t scan it! Once you’re in the line, ditch your reservation and pick something else.
The Biggest Secret, EVER!!!
What if I told you that you actually can get more than 3 free FastPasses? If you book your 3 Fastpass for early in the day, you can book another once you’ve tapped your MagicBand for the last one.
While you’re in line, open up the My Disney Experience app on your smartphone and book that 4th Fastpass! After you tap your band for your 4th ride, you can book a 5th FP, and so on. This Disney Fastpass secret will lead you to “unlimited” Fastpass possibilities for the rest of the day!
Amazing, right????
Another option is to stay at Club Level in certain Disney World resorts. You can pay $50 a day to get three more FastPasses. This will give you a 90-day window to book 6 FastPasses per day.
Research the Tiers for Rides
Did you know Disney rides are ranked into tiers? Rides that are in Tier 1 are the most popular and in demand, and typically the harder to FastPass for. Tier 2 rides and attractions are essentially everything else. When you pre-book your 3 Fastpasses, only one of them can be for a Tier 1 attraction.
Fortunately, Magic Kingdom doesn’t use this system so all of the rides are fair game. However, the other parks do, so you’ll need to plan accordingly.

The Tower of London is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. Honestly, visiting the town of Bathand the historic tower were the highlights of my time in England.
Over the last 900 years, the Tower has served as a royal palace, a fortress, a prison, a mint, a treasury, an armory, a royal observatory, a zoo, and a handful of other things. This iconic structure represents some of England’s most prestigious, bloodiest, and tumultuous times.
A visit to the Tower of London is an absolute must, whether your traveling solo, as a couple, or as a family. It’s one of those places where everyone can appreciate.
Most visitors head straight to the Waterloo Barracks, which contains the magnificent Crown Jewels.
The Construction & History of the Tower of London
The Tower of London rose from nothing to greatness just like the man who dreamt it. William the Conqueror faced a ton of adversity as he was growing up because he was born a bastard. However, he still managed to rise above the adversity and become England’s first Norman king in 1066.
When William came into power, London was a large willed city. William built fords to help protect (and control) the city. Like most leaders of the time, William wanted to build a palace to show how important and powerful he was. Soon, the construction of the White Tower began.
Over the next few centuries, a handful of Henry’s and Edward’s expanded the palace and fortress. They added extravagant features like a moat, towers, a chapel and luxurious apartments.
Things weren’t always glamorous at the Tower. The Tower was used as a prison and execution site. There was also an ill-attempt to use the location as a zoo- however, the zookeepers were not very knowledgeable about taking care of animals such as lions and polar bears.
Location
The Tower of London, officially known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. The Tower Bridge is also located in the Tower Hill borough, one of the oldest parts of London. It is easily accessible from the Tower Hill station.
Highlights of the Tower of London
Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) Tour
The best way to get to know the Tower and it’s deep, rich history is to take the Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) tour. The Yeoman Warders are super informative and often quite funny! The tours are included in the price of your admission. They leave every 30 minutes started at 10 AM and depart from near the entrance. The tours last about 45 minutes and are well worth it!
Not only do these fellows serve as tour guides, but they are also part of the British Armed Forces! They live on site and help to protect the Crown Jewels which contains one of the biggest cut diamonds in the world.
The Crown Jewels
Did you know the Tower is home to the Crown Jewels? These jewels would put the Kardashian’s collection to shame! Tucked safely behind the Tower’s walls is the world-famous collection of 23,578 gemstones including pieces that are used in modern-day royal ceremonies. Many of these pieces are iconic symbols of the British monarchy.
The Crown Jewels have been stored and displayed at the Tower of London since 1661. At the heart of the collection is the Coronation Regalia- a group of highly symbolic objects used since 1661 to crown sovereigns of England. These pieces include St. Edward’s Crown, The Sovereign’s Orb, and The Sovereign’s Sceptre and Rod.
Photography and videos of the photography is not allowed. There are quite a few staff members hovering around enforcing these rules.
Bloody Tower
The Tower was the most dreaded prison in medieval times. The Tower of London now has 22 different towers but none is more famous than The Bloody Tower. The Bloody Tower is most known for being the location of the murder of 12-year old Edward V and his younger brother, Richard in 1483. The boys were taken to the Tower and never seen again. Their Uncle Richard was later crowned king. The incident is one of the most infamous events associated with the Tower of London.
The Tower also held many other high-status prisoners (in various towers) such as Anne Boleyn, William Wallace, James I of Scotland, David II of Scotland, Richard II of England, Elizabeth I of England, Guy Fawkes, Sir Walter Raleigh, and more.
The White Tower
The White Tower is the heart of the Tower of London. This late 11th-Century 90-foot structure would have dominated the skyline when it was built. The Tower was one of William the Conqueror’s most proud accomplishments. It contains a dungeon, the Royal Armouries, a banquet hall, state apartments, and a chapel of St. John the Evangelist.
The Ravens & Tower Green
It is said that the kingdom and the Tower of London will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the fortress. Today, the fortress is home to seven ravens- the mandatory 6 plus an extra one…just in case. Jubilee, Harris, Gripp, Rocky, Erin, Poppy, and Merlina are the current residents. The ravens are free to roam the Tower grounds during the day.
Execution within the Tower Grounds was reserved for only the most important captives. These included high ranking officials and members of royalty. In total, 10 people were beheaded on Tower Green. These include Henry VIII’s second and fifth wives (Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard).
The Royal Armoury
Even if you aren’t a huge history nerd or a war buff, this collection is pretty impressive. Many of those fancy tournament suits of armour once believed to Henry VIII himself. There are also several pieces that belonged to Charles I.
Be sure to check out Henry’s laughable 1540’s suit of armor with a rather sizely “Crown Jewel” protector- for a lack of a better phrase. *wink, wink*
Tower Bridge Views
The iconic Tower Bridge looms over the River Thames just outside of the walls of the palace. The walls of The Tower of London offer some of the most phenomenal views of the Tower Bridge.
Ceremony of the Keys
Another cool thing to do at the Tower is to participate in the the Ceremony of the Keys. Visitors can participate in this special ceremony to lock up the Tower of London nightly. Tickets are free but must be booked months in advance.
The sentry cries out, ‘Halt, who comes there?’ The Yeoman Warder replies, ‘The keys.’ ‘Whose keys?’ ‘Queen Elizabeth’s keys.’ ‘Pass then, all’s well.’
Aside from the monarch’s name, this is the exact exchange that has been spoken for centuries and forms part of the traditional ‘locking up’ of the Tower of London.

Wear good walking shoes, there are tons of cobblestones and stairs.
It will probably take you around 3 or 4 hours to get around the Tower of London.
The last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

The Tower is closed December 24th-26th and January 1st.
The Tower Bridge spans the Thames just outside of the palace’s walls. It’s well worth a trip, while you’re there.

Nobody in their right mind wants to spend their entire visit to Disney waiting in line. Unfortunately, long lines are a part of visiting the park. For some rides, such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, the line can be longer than 3 hours! There are some rides you should use a FastPass on to avoid standing around, twiddling your thumbs in the hot Florida heat.
What is FastPass+?
With the purchase of all Disney World tickets, you get 3 free FastPasses a day! Yes, free! A FastPass means that you are reserving your spot for a ride or attraction during a one hour window of time. Now, this doesn’t mean you won’t be standing in line, it just means that it will be a much shorter line.
We like to use them to secure spots for 2 rides and 1 character meet and greet.

How Do You Get FastPass+?
Once you purchase your park tickets, or if you have an annual pass, you can set up your FastPasses. You can use the My Disney Experience app, or the My Disney Experience section of the Disney World website. You can also hit up one of the kiosks in the parks.
When Can You Book FastPass+?
You can book your FastPass+ slots 30 days in advance, or 60 days in advance if you are staying at a Disney Resort. The earlier you try to book these time slots, the more likely you’ll be able to reserve your favorite ride. Some Fastpasses go quickly! The time slots become available at 7 AM EST so set your alarm!

Rides You Should Use a FastPass On
Obviously, FastPasses for the most popular rides are going to get snagged first. Booking the hardest rides first is a quick and easy Fastpass secret that people may not even think of.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a classic Disney roller coaster that is gentle enough that younger kids can ride it (and feel totally cool for doing so!). The line for the attraction is mostly outdoors which gets awfully hot in the Florida heat. If you want to check out this family-friendly coaster, you may want to grab a FastPass.
Peter Pan’s Flight
Climb aboard a flying pirate ship and venture off to Neverland with Peter Pan. This classic Disney tale comes to life as you fly to the home of the Lost Boys. Since there is no height requirement, this classic ride is popular with families.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
Since this is a newer attraction, it draws a larger crowd. In fact, people will wait for hours to hop on the Snow White inspired roller coaster. The ride is super smooth and totally fun! Its thrill level is somewhere between Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the infamous Space Mountain.
Space Mountain
This indoor coaster takes you on a high-speed journey into the deepest, darkest reaches of outer space. It’s not deliberately scary but it’s dark, fast, and jerky- which makes it a bit more terrifying. Part of the line is indoors and has interactive features throughout, which makes the lines bearable- but you’ll still probably want to snag a FastPass for this popular ride.
Splash Mountain
It’s pretty obvious why this water ride is popular with visitors! Each day hundreds of people flock to Splash Mountain to escape the hot, humid, Florida climate. The lines for this ride tend to be long, but the thrilling drop at the end makes it worth the wait. If you don’t use a FastPass for this ride, make it one of your first stops in the morning to avoid long lines.

I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to many of the Caribbean islands. Between all of my cruises, I’ve traveled to roughly 20 ports. Some of them have been absolutely incredible whereas others pale in comparison. I’m often asked what my favorite Caribbean cruise ports are and boy, is that a tough question!
About the Caribbean
The corners of the Caribbean are very different. In the Eastern Caribbean, you have stunning volcanic islands covered in white sandy beaches and lush green rainforests and canopies. In the Western Caribbean, you’ll find adventures around every corner! The Southern Caribbean is very chill and laid back with a heavy European influence.
My Favorite Caribbean Cruise Ports
It’s hard to narrow my favorite port down to just one… so I’m going to attempt to narrow it down to five, which believe me is also quite the challenge. Even as I jotted down this list, my mind changed at least three times.
Belize
Belize is without a doubt my favorite country in the world (so far!). I’ve been to over 20 countries and nothing compares to this incredible, or dare I say un-Belize-able place! Belize is most certainly a diamond in the rough.
Over the last 10 years, I have visited 6 times and the country has grown so much, thanks to tourism. I have had some pretty incredible adventures in Belize- ziplining, cave tubing, and swimming with sharks. I’ve traveled as far west as San Ignacio by the Guatemalan border where you can explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Xuanantunich and Cahal Pech and as far north as the absolutely stunning Caye Caulker. Each and every time I visit I am amazed by how fabulous this place is!
Bonaire
Bonaire is small-town friendly and that’s not just because it’s only just over 100 square miles. The island is mostly inhabited by super friendly Dutch and vibrant pink flamingos, and it is surrounded by an absolutely stunning it. I have snorkeled many reefs in my day but none of them compare to how beautiful the reef surrounding the island. The reefs are protected as a marine eco-park so they remain untouched and unspoiled.
There’s Roatan and then there’s Mahogany Bay. Let me preface this by saying that these are two very, very different places. Mahogany Bay is the area of Roatan that Carnival has developed into a gorgeous, picturesque beach conveniently located within walking distance from the ship. And then… there’s Roatan.
I’d pick Roatan over Mahogany Bay any day! Like Belize, Roatan, Hondurasis a little rough around the edges. But remember, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The island is surrounded by turquoise water and filled with picture-perfect beaches covered with giant palm trees. The West End of the island is perfect for snorkeling and relaxing on the beach. The island is also home toLittle French Key, one of my favorite places to vacation.
One of the best things about St. Thomas is the fact that we Americans can visit without having a passport. That is because St. Thomas is located in the US Virgin Islands. St. Thomas is a truly beautiful place. The lush green hillsides are dotted with extravagant homes for the rich and famous. The beaches (like Magens Bay) are like nothing you could even imagine. Be sure to head on up to Paradise Point to check out the views from the top of the mountain.
Another reason I love St. Thomas so much is its proximity to nearby St. John. St. John is protected under the US National Park system so it has remained in pristine condition.
Tortola
England is one of my favorite countries, so it’s no surprise that I fell in love with Tortola. I know what you’re thinking; how can these two destinations be anything alike? You see, Tortola is part of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). It’s a lot like St. Thomas (see above) only heavily influenced by its European settlers; the British. We’re talking All Hail the Queen, red phone booths, and British accents. One of my favorite thing about Tortola is how well preserved their historic sites are. It is truly like you’re stepping back in time.
“Do I Need to Book an Excursion in Belize?” This is a question that I get asked a lot. Quite frankly, there are some cruise ports where you absolutely must book an excursion, and then there are others where you really don’t have to.
What is an Excursion?
An excursion is an activity that you book in a cruise port. The excursions range from historic tours, snorkeling and beach tours, visits to popular attractions, activities that will get your adrenaline pumping, and cultural activities. They are booked through local tour companies and cost additional money. Excursions can go from anywhere from $39 to hundreds of dollars for scuba diving, golfing, and helicopter tours.
Do I Need to Book an Excursion in Belize?
Belize is one of those ports where you will definitely need to book an excursion. Outside of a handful of shops at the port, there’s really nothing to do and quite frankly, the city isn’t safe to explore on your own. In order to truly experience how magnificent Belize is, you’ll have to get out of the city.
Nearby Beaches
Most people probably assume there are beaches in Belize City…considering it is on the coast. Unfortunately, they would be assuming wrong. Most of the coastline is covered in mangroves and beaches are few and far between. In order to hit the beach in Belize, you’ll have to travel north towards Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye or south to the Placencia Peninsula. If you plan to hit the beach while you’re in Belize, your best bet would be to book an excursion.

Xunantunich Ruins, Belize
Xunantunich
These are ruins are, without a doubt, my ultimate favorite! Xunantunich is home to the tallest Maya ruins in Belize. Scale to the top of El Castillo (if you dare!) for remarkable views of the Belizean and Guatemalan countryside.
Sharks, Rays, & Barrier Reef
This tour begins with a scenic boat ride along Belize’s barrier islands to the beautiful island of Caye Caulker. You’ll have a chance to snorkel the reef before heading to Shark & Ray Alley where you’ll come up close and personal with nurse sharks and rays in their natural habitat. Afterward, you’ll have lunch at Lazy Lizard located at the world-famous “Split”.

Rainforest Zip Line & Cave Tubing
This excursion combines two of my favorite activities I’ve ever done in Belize- zip lining and cave tubing. You’ll start off by zip-lining through the canopy, which is such a cool experience. After taking a short hike through the rainforest of the No Hoch Chen Reserve, you’ll come to the cool waters of the Caves Branch River. From here, you’ll allow the current to whisk you into the caves. It is such an awesome experience! This has probably been my favorite excursion in Belize.
Altun Ha Ruins & River Wildlife Cruise
This tour begins with a 90 minute riverboat tour where you’ll have a chance to scope out the local wildlife. Be on the look out for howler monkeys and iguanas! Next, you’ll make your way to the Maya city for Altun Ha. If the weather is nce, you’ll be able to climb the temples.
Snorkel at Rendezvous Caye
If snorkeling is your thing, you’ll want to head to the Barrier Reef, which is the largest in this Hemisphere. Rendezvous Caye is a private island right in the heart of the reef. The reef has been designated as an International Heritage site by the United Nations. It is absolutely exquisite and one of the best snorkeling excursions available.
Fort Caroline is one of the places that I have been visiting since my childhood. In fact, it’s only about 10 minutes from the house I grew up in. Fort Caroline is known as the Atlantis of Florida because nobody knows where its actual location truly was. Perhaps, it was actually hidden in the woods in my backyard the whole time!
Firing Cannons at Fort Caroline National Memorial
When most people think about forts in northeast Florida, they picture the Spanish fortress Castillo de San Marcos or the Civil War era Fort Clinch. It is often forgotten that the French had a short tenure in the area before they were almost completely wiped out by the Spanish.
The French in Florida
In 1562, the French landed on the banks of the St. Johns River in present-day northeast Florida. The encampment was to be a safe haven for Huguenots who were being persecuted in France because they were Protestants, rather than Catholics.
The Huguenots were led by explorer Jean Ribault who reportedly landed less than 1 mile from Huguenot Memorial Park. Ribault and his men established the settlements of Charlesfort and Fort Caroline (both named in honor of his king, King Charles).
The French came into conflict with the Spanish who established St. Augustine in 1565. Fort Caroline was ambushed by the Spanish, led by Pedro Menendez de Aviles on September 20th. The Spanish killed everyone but 50 women and 26 escapees. The French settlement in Florida came to a bloody end and the Spanish occupied the site as San Mateo until 1569.
What is Fort Caroline National Memorial?
The exact location of the fort is unknown. In 1953 the National Park Service established the Fort Caroline National Memorial along the southern bank of the St. John’s River near a point that commemorates René Goulaine de Laudonnière’s first landing. This structure is a replica of the fort, based on sketches of the 16th-century structure and believed to be a one-third scale model of the original. It is surrounded by hiking trails and other noteworthy historical sites on the 46,000-acre Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve.
The preserve includes; the Theodore Roosevelt Area, with five different Florida ecosystems visible in one hike; the Fort George Island Visitor Center, which describes the natural and cultural history of the preserve’s island home; and Kingsley Plantation, which includes the oldest standing plantation house in Florida as well as several original slave quarters. One of our favorite local beaches, Blackrock, is also part of this preserve.
Visiting the Fort Caroline National Memorial
Fort Caroline is easily accessible, although it does require a short walk down a well-beaten path through the woods to access to fort.
Along the way, visitors will pass recently renovated replicas of Timucua structures including two huts and a canoe made out of a hulled-out tree. The Timucua were indigenous people that live in Northeast and North Central Florida and Southeast Georgia. The Huguenots befriended the Timucua and these structures serve as a symbol of their relationship.
The triangular wooden open-air structure is located on the banks of the St. Johns River. Throughout the fort, you’ll find signage explaining the history of the French Huguenots and their short stint in Florida.
Our kids had a blast climbing the steps, pretending to fire the cannons, and running up and down the embankments.
Fort Caroline is pet-friendly. In fact, our pups love hanging out at the fort and spending time on the trails nearby. If you bring your pooch, please make sure they are on a 6-foot leash, and be sure to clean up after then.
There’s an easy-to-moderate 1.3 mile hiking trail that loops from the parking lot, past the Timucua structures, by the fort, through the woods, and back to the parking lot. The trail is easy to navigate and is quite enjoyable
